About
The Northwest Georgia Charter Academy, a proposed public charter school, will provide an excellent, tuition-free option for K-12 students who reside in Floyd and Polk counties. The school is projected to open to serve K-5 students in fall 2026 and will add grades 6-12 beginning in fall 2027. The founding group is receiving support from the Georgia Charter Schools Association and a team of charter school consultants. The NW GA Charter Academy team is partnering with Pataula Charter Academy - a successful charter school in southwest Georgia. The NW GA Charter Academy academic model, policies and procedures will be based on Pataula’s model with adjustments to fit the specific needs of the Floyd and Rome communities. The interdisciplinary, hands-on, project-based model has yielded above-average academic student outcomes for Pataula students. In addition to academic outcomes, the model encourages critical thinking, respect for self and others, responsibility and commitment to community service. During the fall of 2024, the founding group will seek input from the community to ensure that the model meets the needs of the Floyd and Rome communities. Applications for authorization (funding) will be concurrently submitted to the State Charter School Commission (SCSC) of Georgia and to a local school district in early 2025; authorization should be granted in July or August 2025. Between authorization and opening in fall 2026, the academy’s governing board will work with GCSA and others to plan for the school opening.
