Special Education Teacher

 The Special Education Teacher serves as a core member of the instructional and student support team and reports directly to the Superintendent/Principal. This position ensures that students with disabilities receive high-quality, specially designed instruction and appropriate supports and services in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504, and Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) regulations. The Special Education Teacher is responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), ensuring access to the general education curriculum in the least restrictive environment (LRE). The teacher collaborates with general education teachers, families, and related service providers to meet each student’s academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs. This role supports the mission and vision of Northwest Georgia Charter Academy by promoting inclusive education, equity, and a culture of high expectations for all learners. 

ESSENTIAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Instructional Planning and Delivery ● Develop, implement, and revise Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. ● Provide direct, specially designed instruction to address students’ IEP goals and objectives. ● Modify and adapt instructional methods, materials, and assessments to ensure meaningful access to the general education curriculum. ● Collaborate with general education teachers to co-plan and co-teach lessons aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). ● Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies, technology, and accommodations to promote student engagement and progress. ● Conduct ongoing progress monitoring and maintain documentation of student growth toward IEP goals. ● Support the use of assistive technology and adaptive materials to enhance learning. NWGA Charter Academy  Job Description Compliance and Documentation ● Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local special education requirements and school procedures. ● Maintain accurate and timely documentation of IEPs, service logs, progress reports, evaluation reports, and parent communication. ● Facilitate and participate in IEP, eligibility, and review meetings with families and team members. ● Ensure service delivery and instructional practices are consistent with the IEP and LRE requirements. ● Maintain confidentiality and uphold the legal rights of students with disabilities and their families. ● Support Child Find activities, referrals, and evaluations in collaboration with school leadership and the district. Student Support and Collaboration ● Implement evidence-based behavioral interventions and supports consistent with students’ IEPs and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). ● Collaborate with school counselors, behavior specialists, and related service providers to design and deliver social-emotional and behavioral supports. ● Promote positive behavior, self-regulation, and student agency through proactive, restorative approaches. ● Support the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework by providing Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions and progress monitoring data. ● Supervise and train paraprofessionals assigned to support students with disabilities. Assessment and Data-Driven Instruction ● Conduct and interpret formal and informal assessments to determine eligibility, instructional needs, and progress toward IEP goals. ● Administer required state and local assessments, including accommodations and modifications as documented in the IEP. ● Maintain accurate student data records and contribute to the school’s accountability and continuous improvement processes. ● Analyze individual, classroom, and schoolwide data to identify strengths, needs, and intervention priorities. NWGA Charter Academy  Job Description Professional Collaboration and Growth ● Participate actively in grade-level, department, and special education team meetings. ● Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, and related service providers to promote inclusion and equitable practices. ● Engage in professional learning to remain informed about changes in special education law, instructional strategies, and compliance expectations. ● Reflect on professional practice, seek feedback, and demonstrate a growth mindset toward continuous improvement. ● Support and mentor paraprofessionals, interns, or new staff as assigned. Family and Community Engagement ● Maintain regular, open, and professional communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and services. ● Encourage parent participation in the IEP process and foster collaborative relationships that support student success. ● Participate in family nights, conferences, and community outreach activities to promote awareness of inclusive education. ● Represent the school positively in interactions with families, agencies, and community partners. Perform additional duties as may be assigned or required by the Superintendent/Principal, Governing Board, or applicable federal or state requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS Required Credentials ● Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. ● Valid Georgia teaching certificate (or eligibility) in Special Education. ● Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, Georgia special education rules, and IEP compliance requirements. ● Demonstrated success in developing and implementing individualized instructional programs. ● Proficiency in progress monitoring, data analysis, and documentation. Preferred Credentials ● Master’s degree in Special Education or related field. ● Endorsements in Reading, ESOL, Autism, or Behavior Intervention. ● Experience in inclusive or co-taught classroom settings. ● Familiarity with MTSS, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and restorative practices. ● Experience in charter or innovative school environments. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS ● Maintain confidentiality of student information and records ● Complete required background check and fingerprint clearance prior to employment ● Attend evening and weekend events, including school functions, IEP meetings, or professional development as needed ● Participate in ongoing professional learning and maintain state certification to include the EL model of the school ● Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and adherence to school policies and procedures ● Adhere to professional dress code and conduct standards NWGA Charter Academy  Job Description 

WORKING CONDITIONS & DEMANDS OF THE JOB Mental and Physical Ongoing Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines and prolonged or irregular hours; Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Mental and Physical Occasional Demands: Lifting and carrying 10-25 pounds frequently, 25-40 pounds occasionally; may be required under specific circumstances to provide physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to themselves or others; travel to other locations as needed for training, supervision, or school events. Environmental Ongoing Factors: Frequent exposure to  temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise.  Environmental Occasional Factors: Occasional exposure to:  biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)  

WORK SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION  ● 40+ hours per week, full-time/49% max TRS retiree/part-time hours as contracted ● Evening and weekends required ● Exempt, salaried employee or part-time as contracted ● Full benefits package for full-time employees ● 190 day calendar, 49% as scheduled, or part-time as contracted ● Salary commensurate with experience
