JOB TITLE: LIBRARY SECURITY GUARD
Part time position (17 hours per week)
DEPARTMENT: Rome/Floyd County Library
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for maintaining a calm, orderly atmosphere on library property, both
inside and outside the building. The security guard must handle any problems of a disciplinary
nature that may arise. The security guard is responsible for providing a safe facility for staff and
patrons by insuring that laws, policies, and guidelines for safety and proper use of the facility are
followed.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Regular patrol of building and grounds.
- Be sure that patrons are not in a non-public area.
- Assisting staff members when they request help.
- Be familiar with Emergency Preparedness plan and be able to put into action when necessary.
- Monitor Internet accessible computers to insure no city codes are being violated (viewing
inappropriate material).
- Check restrooms regularly.
- Enforce library policies and guidelines for behavior while in building and on library grounds.
- Adjust moving walls in meeting rooms as necessary.
- Check library at the end of each day to ensure no patrons are in building.
- Maintain quiet in library. When patrons are too loud, ask them to lower voice.
- Enforce parking zones. Assist in parking when special events are going on at the library or downtown.
- Escort staff out when library is closed, make sure the back gate is secured.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of the standard practices and methods used in building security and safety.
- Knowledge of state, county, and city codes and safety regulations.
- Ability to work with public using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Ability to deal with situations in a calm, non-alarming manner.
- Monitor behavior of patrons on library premises.
- Knowledge of handling juveniles and adults committing misdemeanors and felonies.
- Ability to follow direction from supervisor.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The Director assigns work in terms of general instructions, which may require the use of judgment. The
worker must decide how to apply them without specific guidance.
GUIDELINES:
Guidelines include state, county and city codes and safety codes. Guidelines also include accepted
practices, policies approved by the Library Board of Trustees, ALA guidelines, and state and federal laws,
rules and regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / CAPABILITIES:
The work is typically performed while standing and walking.
Lifting light and heavy objects (50+ pounds) is required.
Able to walk a patrol.
Hold a heavy door open for minutes at a time
Climb steep stairs or a ladder.
20/20 vision desirable.
Hear normal conversation.
Bend, stoop or work with hands above shoulder level.
Talk intelligibly over a telephone or portable radio and be understood by others.
Present a neat, clean, non-threatening appearance.
EDUCATIONAL CAPABILITY:
High School diploma or equivalent.
OTHER CAPABILITIES:
No criminal conviction record indicating moral turpitude.
No history of violent acts that would indicate the candidate would harm a patron or employee.
No history of child abuse / sexual abuse.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This work is performed mostly indoors and outside in various weather conditions.
SCHEDULE: Two evenings per week, every other Saturday.
