Residence Life Maintenance Technician

The Residence Life Maintenance Technician coordinates and executes facilities needs within Berry College's student residential buildings. This individual reports directly to the Director of Residence Life and collaborates daily with the College's Facilities Services teams to ensure residential facilities' maintenance, repair, and overall functionality. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, contributing to a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for all students in campus housing.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Facility Management and Maintenance Coordination:

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Residence Life Office and the College's Facilities Services team for issues related to residential buildings.
  • Triage maintenance requests to determine which requests can be addressed immediately and which requests should be submitted to Facilities.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities Services team, utilizing provided software systems, to schedule, track, and manage maintenance requests, repairs, and facility upgrades.
  • Ensure that all residential buildings are in safe, comfortable, and well-maintained condition by conducting regular inspections.
  • Oversee the proper functioning of all basic utilities (water, heating, cooling, electricity) in residence halls and work with Facilities Services on any issues.
  • Work with Facilities Services to identify and document any needed replacements or repairs for inventory items.

2. Student and Staff Support:

  • Respond to student and family concerns regarding residence hall facilities and promptly and professionally address requests or complaints.
  • Partner with a variety of campus constituents, including Telecommunications, Facilities Services, and Custodial Service, to facilitate repairs and communicate repair plans with affected students and/or communities.
  • Maintain effective communication with the Director of Residence Life regarding the status of facility issues and large-scale projects.

3. Crisis Response and Emergency Preparedness:

  • Work with Residence Life and Facilities Services staff to ensure residence halls are prepared for emergency situations such as severe weather, power outages, or building evacuations.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of emergency systems, such as fire alarms and exit lighting, and coordinate necessary maintenance.


Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or a combination of relevant work experience and education.

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in facilities management, housing, or a related field, preferably within a higher education setting.
  • Experience working collaboratively with both staff and students in a campus environment.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, students, and parents.
  • Problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to facility issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of general facilities management, including maintenance, repairs, and construction.
  • Strong computer and technical proficiency required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform periodic inspections of residential facilities, including climbing stairs, walking long distances, and the ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
