PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Inspects, evaluates, and tests products to ensure design specifications and customer and company quality standards are maintained. Reviews products in process in cooperation with production employees to verify quality is maintained at all phases of the manufacture.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Conducts various quality tests verifying conformance to design and print specifications, using a microscopic camera, optical measuring machine, cutting machine, polishing machine, specific gravity scale, thread gauge, digital caliper, and thickness gauge.
- Inspects parts/assemblies to ensure operator accuracy and proper machine setup verifies dimensions to print specifications and within tolerance, and certifies product meets customer specification.
- Assists production employees by verifying quality, giving advice, assistance, training, and answering questions as needed.
- Verifies the addition of new product prints to the quality files and updates revisions.
- Participates in problem-solving groups.
- Maintains good housekeeping standards in assigned areas.
- Performs all duties following established safety procedures and guidelines using assigned safety equipment.
- Performs other duties as required.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
- Must learn the company's quality assurance procedures, processes, and requirements.
- Must know the company products, terminology, manufacturing procedures, related design specifications, and quality standards.
- Requires the ability to read and interpret product prints, quality specifications, BOM, and quality-related technical data.
- Must be familiar with quality inspection procedures and be skilled in computer and related software programs.
- Must have math skills, including trigonometry.
- Requires the ability to conduct a wide range of quality lab tests and to use precision measuring instruments, CMM, gauges, and squares.
- Requires the ability to maintain various records, files, and documentation to support of the quality system.
- Must be familiar with the company's inventory system and related product identification labels. Must be certified to operate a forklift and overhead crane. Requires the ability to record QA data accurately and legibly.
EXPERIENCE AND JOB TRAINING:
- Three to six months in the position would be required to become proficient in the job, with prior work experience in the manufacturing area providing training in company products and manufacturing processes.
EDUCATION:
- Completion of high school or equivalent education, with math courses and related subjects providing skills essential to learn the job.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS:
- Interacts frequently with coworkers, production operators, and supervisors in the exchange of information and problem resolution.
- Tact, courtesy, and etiquette are required to maintain harmonious working relationships.
CONFIDENTIAL DATA:
- Has access to quality information, test results, and product designs which should remain confidential.
- An above-average degree of discretion is required to maintain confidentiality.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACCURACY:
- Works with sensitive test equipment which could be damaged if used incorrectly.
- Normal use and care should prevent damage to other tools and equipment.
- Monitors the quality of parts, materials, and products, where errors should be detected within the quality assurance system/procedures.
- Undetected errors could have both minimal and/or far-reaching effects on customer goodwill and company reputation.
MENTAL/VISUAL/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Close mental concentration and visual accuracy are required while conducting tests and inspections.
- Must be able to speak, listen, walk, reach, and bend.
- Light to heavy lifting is required periodically.
- Must maneuver and position heavy objects with the aid of a forklift and overhead crane.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity are required.
RESOURCEFULNESS AND INITIATIVE:
- Follows established procedures and works independently to conduct quality inspections/tests.
- Must frequently use judgment and initiative to ensure quality standards are maintained.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
ENVIRONMENT:
- Works in a normal steel fabrication environment in contact with machine noise and factory working conditions.
- Must wear safety equipment including a hard hat, ear, eye, and foot protection.
