Job Title: Nonprofit Finance Director
Position type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Reports to: Executive Director
Position Summary:
The Finance Director plays a crucial role in maintaining the financial integrity of the organization by ensuring accurate and timely accounting of finances and investments, as well as improving the efficiency and effectiveness of operations. This individual is actively involved in achieving the organization’s objectives and is responsible for all accounting functions, coordinating the management of investments, and overseeing operational processes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Financial Management
• Develop and manage the annual budget process in conjunction with the Executive Director.
• Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Oversee the management and reporting of grants.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and standards.
• Provide financial analysis and insights to support strategic decision-making.
• Manage cash flow and financial forecasting.
• Coordinate with external auditors and facilitate the annual audit process.
• Monitor and manage financial risks effectively.
• Develop and implement financial policies and procedures.
• Support fundraising efforts by providing relevant financial data and analysis.
• Collaborate with program managers to develop and monitor program budgets.
• Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to stakeholders.
• Manage accounts payable and receivable functions.
• Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with related regulations.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records.
• Provide training and support to staff on financial matters.
• Assist in developing financial strategies and long-term planning.
• Ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial data.
• Manage relationships with banks and other financial institutions.
• Stay informed about changes in nonprofit financial regulations and best practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, or a related field; a Master’s degree (MBA or MPA) is preferred.
• Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in nonprofit financial management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
• In-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, practices, and financial reporting standards (e.g., GAAP).
• Proven experience in developing and managing budgets, forecasting, and conducting financial analyses to drive strategic decision-making.
• High proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems, with a preference for familiarity with QuickBooks, Sage, or similar platforms.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
• Solid experience in grant management, compliance, and reporting to funding agencies.
• Experience with audit processes, managing relationships with external auditors, and preparing for audits.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, and familiarity with data visualization tools.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent certification is highly preferred.
