Maintenance Supervisor

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Responsible for Planning, managing, and coordinating the activities and resources of the Engineering Department per company policies, manufacturing standards, methods, product requirements, quality standards, and production schedules.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Directs and engineers all new equipment and fixtures for the company. 
  • Directs and oversees the maintenance and repair of production machinery and plant equipment to facilitate production.
  • Responds to requests for maintenance, establishes priorities, and adjusts schedules to ensure optimum use of manpower with timely response to production needs.
  • Selects supplies, obtains price quotes and orders repair parts for machinery and equipment.
  • Develops and submits maintenance estimates for manpower and budget performance.
  • Plans and coordinates the preventative maintenance plan for production equipment.
  • Prepares and coordinates maintenance tasks requiring machine shutdown to minimize lost time, monitors progress, and assists as needed.
  • Troubleshoots, analyzes, and resolves problems associated with machinery, tools, and equipment.
  • Makes work assignments to ensure optimum utilization of employees' technical skills.
  • Maintains records and documentation of all maintenance services and prepares recaps/summaries.
  • Maintains a library of technical manuals on machines, print files, machine specifications, and similar files on equipment.
  • Monitors completion of projects to ensure that safety and quality standards are met.
  • Plans and oversees cross-training of employees.
  • Enforces compliance with safety rules governing lockout of equipment, crane repairs, OSHA guidelines, and related environmental regulations.
  • Monitors compliance with building, electrical, and fire codes and other local ordinances.
  • Performs visual and machine inspection for preventative maintenance and submits reports showing the operability of various plant machinery.
  • Coordinates facility/equipment repairs with outside vendors and oversees the progress of such projects.
  • Maintains and manages the appropriate inventory of parts of high-usage electronic, electrical, and mechanical parts for machinery and equipment.
  • Reviews and evaluates the performance of subordinates.
  • Controls production supply expenses and maintenance work hours to remain within the departmental budget.
  • Maintains good housekeeping standards in assigned areas.
  • Performs all duties following established safety procedures and guidelines using assigned safety equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and controls the work of maintenance employees within the plant. Performs performance evaluations; enforces company policy and safety rules and discipline.  Trains and provides time for cross-training.  Submits maintenance budget requests and operates within these limits. Supervises up to 4 technicians.

 TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND/OR MACHINERY USED 

  • Heavy machinery tools related to the maintenance trade. 
  • The machines themselves or the tools necessary to maintain and repair machines used for production.
  • Mechanic Tools, Hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, etc.

  • Requires great listening skills and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all employees, customers, and suppliers. 
  • Ability to maintain positive successful working relationships.
  • Ability to follow all company policies, rules, procedures and perform all job duties to standards with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Better than average problem-solving skills, judgment, planning skills, and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to comprehend complex ideas and make better-than-average / sound decisions regarding the troubleshooting and execution of repairs to machines, while balancing costs of repair and production downtime. 
  • Ability to plan and devise methods and techniques to reduce costs and avoid downtime
  • Ability to perform duties with a high degree of accuracy and maintenance of close tolerances. Ability to produce accurate and precise records of machine repairs, maintenance and modifications
  • Ability to work confidentially and with an above average degree of discretion with proprietary components/elements and designs in machines. Ability to understand confidentially rules and the negative impacts if not followed

 WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • Work is regularly performed outside in weather conditions, including but not limited to rain and extreme heat/cold, wet and/or humid conditions, hot and/or dry conditions. Regular exposure to dust and small metal particulates.
  • Workers are regularly exposed to heavy machinery, equipment, tools, and advanced machinery environments consisting of large/heavy moving objects and parts that may be of extreme hot/cold temperatures. Exposure to constant loud noise levels (hearing protection is provided). Constant exposure to dust and small metal particulates.
  • Workers are regularly exposed to situations where, if safety guidelines are not followed, there is a potential for falls, sprains, back strain, mashed appendages, cuts, particulates in eyes, etc. Workers are provided protective equipment that must be worn at all times.

 DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
 

  • 2-year technical degree in facilities maintenance or a related field. 
  • 5 years of experience in maintaining production equipment and machines in the metal fabrication industry
  • Formal supervisory/managerial training and or prior experience as a supervisor

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) Advanced AutoCad skills
  • 3 – 6 months in the position are required to become proficient in all phases of the job
  • Ability to plan and coordinate maintenance for metal cutting and secondary operation equipment
  • Ability to work with a variety of computer programs (Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCad) and learn various new software programs quickly and to an advanced level.
  • Better than average, excellent working knowledge of industrial technology
  • Requires a craftsman level of knowledge, skills, and bility to perform the work in a range of trades and crafts including mechanical, pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical, and electronic
  • Knowledge of the industry and mechanics involved with production in the metal fabrication industry. 
  • Ability to read, interpret, and modify blueprints, schematics, drawings, and technical instruction manuals
  • Familiarity and understanding of the requirements of municipal and state codes of buildings and electrical codes
  • Advanced shop mathematics skills and proficient use of a wide variety of measuring devices and instruments
  • Familiarity with OSHA and related safety procedures, including lockout-tagout, crane specifications, and any other OSHA rules and regulations on industry-specific maintenance.
