Job Description
Position Title: Independent Living Coordinator
Status: Full-Time position
SUMMARY
Note: This is NOT an office-based position. Travel throughout the service area is required. Dependable transportation is a must.
Funding Notice:
This is a full-time position. Funding for this position is currently available through September 30, 2026. Extension of employment beyond this date is dependent upon continued funding availability, job function, and job performance.
The Independent Living Coordinator provides timely, courteous, professional information and referral services to individuals contacting the center. This position coordinates independent living goals for consumers at their request by delivering the Center’s services, including the five (5) core Independent Living services:
• Advocacy
• Information & Referral
• Independent Living Skills Training
• Peer Support
• Transition Services
Transition services may include youth transition, diversion from nursing facilities or other institutions, and transition from nursing facilities or other institutions.
This position serves individuals throughout the fifteen (15) county Northwest Georgia service area. Responsibilities include consumer services, community outreach, promotion of the Center, maintenance of resource databases, participation in assigned programs/events, and active teamwork support.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s Degree in a field relevant to Independent Living Services and/or one to two years of experience in the direct delivery of human services.
Personal experience in independent living with a disability may be substituted for certain educational or work requirements.
• Knowledge of Independent Living philosophy and disability rights.
• Self-motivated, internally driven, and able to work independently while maintaining effective professional collaboration with co-workers, management, consumers, the public, and partner organizations.
• Knowledge of human disabilities and their characteristics, with the ability to work with diverse populations across varying ages and disability types.
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of standard computer programs and office equipment, with the ability to quickly learn new software systems.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to travel and work flexible hours as required by job duties.
• Ability to complete reports, documentation, and required paperwork in a timely and professional manner.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Empower and assist consumers, both in and out of institutions, at their request, in developing and executing individualized plans of action to achieve independent living goals within their chosen communities.
• Conduct outreach to individuals with disabilities to educate them about available choices, resources, and opportunities.
• Provide peer mentoring and support.
• Advocate for accessible and affordable housing, transportation, health care, assistive technology, and other systemic needs.
• Develop curriculum and conduct Independent Living Skills Training on relevant topics.
• Provide Information & Referral services upon request.
• Maintain and update databases of community resources.
• Develop cooperative working relationships with community organizations and service providers.
• Prepare reports, forms, and documentation as required by NWGA CIL and funding sources, including maintaining accurate Consumer Service Records and timely database entry.
• Travel within the service area is REQUIRED, along with occasional travel within Georgia and attendance at regional/national conferences or trainings.
• Assist staff with accommodation support as needed, which may include transportation or travel assistance.
• Be responsible for assigned programs and events as directed by the Executive Director or Assistant Director.
• Conduct public speaking engagements and presentations.
• Participate in fairs, festivals, and community events to promote NWGA CIL.
• Attend meetings and trainings as required.
