JOB SUMMARY:

This is an entry level position in the Fleet Maintenance Department.  The work of this position involves maintenance, inspection and repair of vehicles and equipment. This will include performing a variety of technical, maintenance and minor repair tasks associated with the gasoline and diesel-powered assets to include light and heavy-duty vehicles, light and heavy-duty equipment, small engines, and construction equipment. Will also be responsible for changing and repairing tires on all City vehicles and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of light and heavy-duty units and equipment mechanics.
  • Must be familiar with all aspects of vehicle operation and must understand the functions of the minor components and systems.
  • Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of tire maintenance and servicing requirements.
  • Skill in using various hand tools, such as wrenches, grease guns, hydraulic lifts and operating various equipment.
  • Must be competent at using service and maintenance tools and equipment, and be familiar with different lubricants and service parts specifically made for different makes of mechanical equipment. 
  • Must be able to read and comprehend documents and instruction manuals and have good analytical skills to diagnose problems and make decisions about the most suitable repairs.  
  • Must have good interpersonal skills to discuss vehicle problems and solutions with equipment operators or drivers.
  • Must be self-motivated, energetic and results oriented.
  • Must be able to perform all duties in a safe and efficient manner.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus by vocational training in general vehicle servicing and small engine repair or a related field. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification helpful but not required.
  • Must have the ability to work overtime as emergencies and departmental needs occur.  Some occasions may occur with little to no notice. 
  • Must possess or be able to obtain National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) 100 and 700 within three (3) months of employment. 
  • Must possess and maintain a driver’s license in the state of residency.
