Position Summary

The Prosthetic and Orthotic Technician is responsible for the fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and repair of prosthetic and orthotic devices under the supervision of a certified practitioner. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and strong technical skills to ensure devices meet patient needs and clinical specifications.


Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, modify, and assemble prosthetic and orthotic devices using plastics, metals, composites, and leather.
  • Follow practitioner work orders, technical drawings, and specifications to produce accurate devices.
  • Operate and maintain technical equipment such as grinders, ovens, vacuum systems, and hand tools.
  • Perform finishing, polishing, and adjustments to ensure comfort, durability, and function.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized lab and workspace following health and safety regulations.
  • Assist practitioners in patient fittings and adjustments when required.
  • Repair and service existing devices as needed.
  • Document work completed, materials used and maintain accurate production records.
  • Managing Purchasing and Inventory

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Technical or vocational training in prosthetics and orthotics, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of materials, fabrication techniques, and safety standards.
  • Strong hand skills, mechanical aptitude, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and practitioner work orders.
  • Associate’s degree in Prosthetics & Orthotics Technology or related field preferred.
  • Experience working in a prosthetic/orthotic lab or medical device manufacturing setting preferred.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM systems and emerging digital fabrication technologies preferred.

Work Environment

  • Workshop/laboratory setting with exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, and machinery.
  • Requires use of safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, and masks.
  • May involve occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Standard working hours with flexibility for deadlines or urgent cases.
