The College of Business: 

The Commission of Sport Management Association (COSMA) Sport Management program and the ACBSP accredited College of Business offers Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degrees in the following concentrations: Computer Information Systems, General Business, Accounting, Management, Marketing, and Sport Management. Graduate degrees include an MBA, MBA with concentrations in Healthcare Management, Marketing and Sport Management along with a Master of Accountancy, Master of Management, and a Master of Management with a concentration in Non-Profit Human Services. The College of Business is the largest academic college at Shorter University and is heavily involved in the Rome-Floyd Communities as well as the Northwest region of the state.


Sport Management:

The Department of Sport Management at Shorter University, housed within the College of Business, prepares students for successful careers in the rapidly evolving sport industry through a strong foundation in business principles, sport-specific knowledge, experiential learning, and professional development. The department offers undergraduate and graduate opportunities, including the Bachelor of Business Administration in Sport Management in both traditional and online formats and the Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Sport Management. The department’s BBA and MBA Sport Management programs are accredited by COSMA, reflecting the program’s commitment to academic quality and continuous improvement. The department emphasizes the relationship between sport and business while preparing students to become ethical, innovative, and effective leaders in the sport industry. The curriculum encompasses areas such as sport administration, sport marketing, social media, sport governance, leadership, event and facility management, international sport, risk management, sport operations, and strategic planning. Students also benefit from significant experiential learning opportunities through internships, service-learning initiatives, industry partnerships, guest speakers, professional development events, and engagement with Shorter University Athletics.


A distinguishing strength of the Sport Management Department is its commitment to connecting classroom learning with the professional sport industry. Students have gained internship and employment experience with organizations including the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Falcons, State Farm Arena, Rome Braves, Memphis Grizzlies, NASCAR, Atlanta United, YMCA, professional and collegiate athletic departments, recreation organizations, and numerous other sport and community organizations. The department also maintains strong relationships with industry professionals and provides students with opportunities to develop their professional networks, resumes, communication skills, and career readiness. The department is an integral part of the College of Business and contributes to Shorter University’s broader commitment to developing Christian leaders who demonstrate excellence, service, and integrity. With a strong emphasis on individualized faculty engagement, experiential education, professional preparation, and collaboration with the university’s Department of Athletics and surrounding community, the Sport Management Department provides students with a distinctive educational experience designed to prepare them for leadership across the diverse and dynamic sport industry.


Job Summary: 

The Assistant/Associate Professor of Sport Management position will play a key role in advancing the department’s mission, academic quality, enrollment growth, student success, and connections to the sport industry. The successful candidate will build upon the department’s strengths in experiential learning, professional development, industry engagement, and COSMA-accredited academic programming while identifying opportunities for continued innovation and growth. Working collaboratively with the Dean of the College of Business, faculty, university leadership, the Department of Athletics, and external industry partners, the faculty member will assist in providing vision and direction for the department while fostering a culture of academic excellence, collegiality, innovation, service, and student-centered learning. This person will also contribute to the broader mission of Shorter University by supporting the development of ethical and professionally prepared graduates who are equipped to serve and lead within the sport industry.

Required Qualifications/Experience: 

  • 18 hours of Graduate Sport Management Courses
  • Statement of Faith

Preferred Qualifications/Experience: 

  • An earned doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Sport Management or in a closely related field.
  • Practical work experience that will elevate academic instruction in the classroom.
  • Visionary leadership skills aiming towards the growth of the College of Business and recruitment of Sport Management majors. 
  • Experience in undergraduate and graduate teaching at the college level.
  • Experience with online teaching, preferably in the Canvas delivery system
  • Advising college students through their degree plan to graduation
