Description

he Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home, in partnership with The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, will continue its Lecture Series on Women in Cherokee History on February 27, 2025, in the Mount Berry Room at The Spires. This event will feature Wanda Patterson, who will present 'Harriet Gold Boudinot: A Cherokee Romantic Tragedy.' The lecture explores the early education of Indigenous peoples, a long-distance courtship, racism, life and death in the Cherokee Nation, and the events leading to the tragic Trail of Tears. Harriet Gold, a New England woman, married Elias Boudinot, a Cherokee statesman, editor, and advocate, despite intense societal opposition—creating a story of love, struggle, and historical significance. About the Speaker: Wanda Patterson earned a master’s degree in Secondary Education from West Georgia College in 1969. She spent 30 years teaching English and journalism at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, GA. Since retiring, she has dedicated much of her time to researching American Indian history, with a particular focus on the Cherokee. This event is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, Berry College, and The Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia.
