Composed in 1816, when he was just 19 years old, the “Tragic” Symphony – a designation Schubert chose himself—represents his first serious engagement with the dramatic symphonic tradition of Beethoven. Yet, while the influence of Beethoven is unmistakable in the symphony’s urgency, drama, and bold dynamic contrasts, the voice that emerges is distinctively Schubert’s: lyrical, expansive, and deeply expressive. Written at a crucial moment in Schubert’s creative development, the Fourth Symphony bridges his youthful Classical style and the more personal, emotionally driven symphonic language of his later works. Schubert draws the audience in with a gripping slow introduction, driving rhythms, luminous melodies, and a thrilling finale that transforms darkness into radiant light. You are in for a treat as we share with you Schubert’s exquisite Fourth Symphony on Saturday, April 18, 2026, 7pm at the Rome City Auditorium (doors open at 6pm).
